I think this is actually irish Comment by: ng400   
Strictly speaking grog is the mixture of rum and water that was issued daily to the enlisted men on shipboard in the British Navy until fairly recently ('70s maybe?). The water was so that it wouldn't keep and would have to be consumed reasonably promptly. I believe the actual rum content of the grog issue in the 18th century was half a pint per man per day. (!)
