Usage Examples

Those colorful denizens of male despair, the Bowery bum and the rail-riding hobo, have been replaced by the bag lady and the welfare mother. Women have even taken over Skid Row.

In the Great Depression in the US, hobos were "gentlemen of the road" i.e. homeless travelers with self-respect and willing to work, as distinct from bums. If you called a hobo a bum he would be highly offended. Hobos carried on a running fight with the "railroad bulls," who violently interfered with their hitching rides in empty rail cars.
